The Body Shop Australia has opened applications for its 2022 in-store seasonal employment program, with all roles to be filled through its inclusive Open Hiring initiative. The Body Shop Australia’s announcement follows the successful 2021 program, which saw over a third (34%) of 2021 seasonal roles filled by Aussies who traditionally face barriers to employment.
The Body Shop Australia’s Open Hiring program, one of the first of its kind in Australia, removes those barriers, with no background checks required, and aims to provide the experience, skills and training opportunities to set participants up for long-term employment.
What were the executive’s thoughts on the program?
Commenting on the announcement, Shannon Chrisp, APAC Brand and Activism Director added: “Our 2021 Open Hiring program showed just how powerful the impact of breaking down discriminatory barriers to employment can be. As a business, we’ve gained qualified and loyal employees, and participants have benefited from invaluable work experiences that have set them up for future employment; whether at The Body Shop or elsewhere.”
“Now, we’re building on this success and making all seasonal employment positions open exclusively through open hiring. As CEOs and HR teams across Australia look at ways to tackle the current skills shortage, we encourage them to join us in building more inclusive hiring practices and prioritise a person’s potential over their history.”Chrisp further said.
How effective is the program?
In line with the company’s inclusive hiring policy, The Body Shop Australia is working with charity partners Launch Housing, Little Dreamers and APM Employment Services in Australia to encourage those who have traditionally faced barriers to employment to apply.
These include those who have experienced homelessness, young carers, refugees, Aussies with disabilities and First Nations Aussies. Up to 530 Christmas casual positions will be made available through seasonal employment in the firm’s stores this year, including Open Hiring.
Amongst those who took part in the 2021 program with The Body Shop is Maddy O’Brien, a young carer from XYZ commented: “With my responsibilities as a young carer, I hadn’t been able to get much experience in the workplace and was really struggling to find a job.”
“But open hiring really opened the door for me! Not only did it build my confidence, I learnt valuable communication and customer service skills, and now have valuable retail experience I can take into my future career. I couldn’t recommend it enough!” O’Brien further added.
How can you apply for the positions?
Applications for The Body Shop’s program are open online. Applicants are only required to answer three questions, with the chance being offered to candidates in order of application:
- Are you legally authorized to work in Australia?
- Can you lift up to 11kgs and work an eight-hour shift in one day?
- Are you happy to work with customers? (not a disqualifier)
