Australian business owners are spending big on digital freelancers to help them make the shift online, with Youtube videos, Instagram posts and Squarespace websites the services that are most in-demand, new research has revealed.
The insights come from the second semi-annual Fiverr Small Business Needs Index. This index tracks services that small business owners are using to succeed in a digital-first world.
The services that saw the fastest growing searches over the past six months in Australia include:
- YouTube Video Editing; 175%
- Instagram Post; 95%
- Squarespace Web Design; 46%
What has spurred some of these trends?
The index reveals that Australian small business owners grappling with the impact of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic are growing their online presence to reach and engage consumers.
Content-led social media platforms including YouTube and Instagram are popular, with increased demand for short- and long-form video content, static images and animated posts.
This data also highlights the importance of an effective, visually appealing website to anchor an online presence, with the design-forward Squarespace platform popular among small business owners.
The Fiverr Small Business Needs Index analyses data from millions of searches to identify business services that have seen the largest increases. This growth data can predict the products, platforms and tools that small businesses are looking for.

2020 has without a doubt been a difficult time for small businesses around the world, as the COVID-19 pandemic has forced worldwide stay-at-home orders and subsequent business shutdowns.

- Facebook Promotion; 174%

- App Development; 133%
- Brand Name; 85%
- Customer Service; 85%
Fiverr’s Small Business Needs Index also reveals the top three needs for businesses across the globe, specifically Brazil, France, Germany, Israel, Italy, Mexico, the Netherlands, Portugal, the U.K., and the U.S. A more detailed breakdown is viewable here.
