Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the Mastercard Foundation, in collaboration with the Govt of Rwanda, announced an investment in higher education in Africa to aid 10,000 young people from economically disadvantaged communities—such as young women, young people with disabilities, and forcibly displaced young people—and to drive inclusive development.

Duplo, a business-to-business payment platform that makes it easier for African businesses of all sizes to pay each other, has announced that it has closed a $4.3 million in seed funding to launch new products and expand into new business verticals in Nigeria. The seed funding round included Liquid2 Ventures, Soma Capital, Tribe Capital, Commerce Ventures, Basecamp Fund, and Y Combinator. Oui Capital also re-invested after participating in the previous round.

Fighting medicines that kill in Africa: A collaborative and integrated approach

The traffic in falsified and substandard medicines (FSMs) is a severe public health problem for individuals, families, communities and countries by depriving them of access to affordable and good medicines. Although there are encouraging signs of growth in local pharmaceutical production on the African continent, a 2019 study indicates that only 10-30% of medicines consumed in sub-Saharan Africa are manufactured locally according to McKinsey, 2020.

When asked if recent developments in African technology had impacted their perception of the continent, 4 out of 5 (84.6%) answered “yes”.
